Note to self…

…when traveling to Kathmandu, take the bus:

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Officials at Nepal's state-run airline have sacrificed two goats to appease Akash Bhairab, the Hindu sky god, following technical problems with one of its Boeing 757 aircraft, the carrier said Tuesday.

"Good morning, passengers. In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, a small goat and a sharp knife will drop from the overhead compartments. Taking the goat by the ears in your left hand and shouting 'Blood and goats for Akash Bhairab!' hold the knife in you right hand and slice across the jugular like so.

"Once again, thank you for flying Nepal Air!"

First time I ever flew with Royal Brunei, I was in a for a surprise. Instead of the aircraft safety check, they pray. I'd rather put my faith in engineers and mechanics doing their jobs than in deities, but if it comes down to it, I'm Wiccan (if I'm anything), so I'm not even praying to the right ones.

The best bit? During flight, when they show you the map with your destination as a red dot and the plane moving towards it with the "Distance left: wxyz miles / Altitude: 38000 feet" bit? They have a third dot: Mecca.

And their flights are dry - no booze allowed.

Man, that was an experience.

But you get used to stuff. I love Royal Brunei - they're the fastest route to get home (you land in Dubai and hit the gate running, change flights and head to Singapore where you have time for a quick freshen up in the bathrooms before heading for your gate and the last leg back to Brisbane - we can do it door to door in about 28 hours now) and they're a good, safe, cheap airline. Win/win!
